As a team of architects and urban designers who work on transportation projects around the world — from bus benches to integrated urban transportation plans, from Riyadh to Honolulu — we think it’s time to step back and have another look. Perhaps a more optimistic look, as well.
As the San Francisco transportation planner Jeffrey Tumlin said at a recent presentation at Simon Fraser University, “No matter how bad things are in your region, they are so much worse in basically every other region in North America.”
This is not, narrowly, a transit strategy or even a transportation plan; it’s a far-sighted mobility map, connecting people and neighbourhoods — creating opportunities in every part of the region to build walkable, sustainable and more-affordable communities, while keeping automotive traffic flowing efficiently in between.
